How does payroll work in Grenada?

Payroll in Grenada requires employers to withhold two statutory deductions from each employee's gross pay: PAYE income tax and National Insurance Scheme (NIS) contributions. As of January 2026, the combined NIS rate is 14% of insurable earnings (7.5% employer, 6.5% employee), while PAYE is charged at 10% and 28% depending on income band after the personal allowance. Both are filed through Grenada's G-TAX system and due monthly.

How do employers calculate NIS contributions in Grenada?

Employers calculate NIS contributions by applying the current combined rate of 14% to an employee's insurable (gross) earnings, split as 7.5% paid by the employer and 6.5% deducted from the employee. Contributions are calculated up to NIS's maximum insurable earnings ceiling and must be remitted monthly, along with e-remittance uploads, by the stated deadline.

What happens if an employer misses a payroll filing deadline in Grenada?

How does overtime pay work in Grenada?

Under Grenada's Employment Act, employees who work beyond their standard hours are entitled to overtime pay, generally at time-and-a-half for extra hours and double pay for work performed on Sundays or public holidays. What is an HRIS and how does it help businesses?

An HRIS (Human Resource Information System) is software that centralizes employee data, payroll, benefits, time tracking, and compliance records in one system, replacing spreadsheets and manual processes. For growing businesses, it reduces administrative time, lowers compliance risk, and gives managers a single source of truth for workforce information.

How should companies track employee time and attendance?

Companies should track employee time and attendance using a digital system that logs clock-in and clock-out times, calculates hours automatically, and flags overtime or attendance issues in real time. This reduces payroll errors, supports compliance with local labor law recordkeeping requirements, and removes the disputes that come with manual timesheets.

What is workforce management and why does it matter?

Workforce management is the set of processes businesses use to plan, schedule, track, and pay their employees efficiently, covering everything from time and attendance to compliance and payroll. It matters because poor workforce management leads to compliance risk, payroll errors, and wasted labor costs, especially for businesses operating across multiple jurisdictions with different rules.

How does payroll differ across Caribbean countries?

Payroll rules vary significantly across the Caribbean: each country sets its own income tax bands, social security contribution rates, and statutory leave entitlements. For example, Grenada's NIS rate is 14% in 2026 with a two-tier PAYE system, while neighboring islands each run separate national insurance schemes with different rates and earnings ceilings, making single-country payroll templates unreliable across the region.

Can employees keep their social security contributions when moving between Caribbean countries?

Yes. Under the CARICOM Reciprocal Agreement on Social Security, employees who work in more than one CARICOM member country can have their contributions from each country combined to help them qualify for pension benefits, even if they didn't contribute long enough in any single country alone. Each participating country pays a portion of the pension based on the contributions made there.

What are the benefits of payroll automation for Caribbean businesses?

Payroll automation reduces the manual calculation errors common with multi-rate, multi-deduction systems like Grenada's PAYE and NIS structure, ensures filing deadlines aren't missed, and scales more easily as a business grows across multiple Caribbean jurisdictions with different rules. It also creates an audit-ready compliance trail that's difficult to maintain with spreadsheets.
